Be Prepared for this year's storms!

TROPICAL STORM
A low-pressure area with a well-defined rotation and winds from 39 to 73 mph.

HURRICANE
A tropical storm in which sustained winds have reached 74 mph or more.

Hurricane Hazards

Storm Surge:
A dome-shaped rise in seal level caused by
strong winds & extreme low pressure.

High Winds:
Winds from
74 mph to 200 mph which cause extensive damage
to houses, trees, etc.

Tornadoes:
Often spawned
by hurricanes, tornadoes cause extensive damage to life and property.

Heavy Rains:
Caused by torrential rains, surges and tides and affecting coastal & inland areas.

 

Watch:
Conditions described are possible in the specified area within 36 hours.

Warning:
Conditions described are expected in the specified area with 24 hours.

Prepare For A Hurricane

Necessities for your home:
- At least 1 gallon of water per person per day for three days.
- Food for three days, Including nonperishable packaged or canned food & juices, food for infants or the elderly, & snack foods.
- A non electric can opener, cooking tools, fuel, paper plates & plastic utensils.
- Clothing, including rain gear & sturdy shoes.
- Blankets, pillows, bedding.
- First Aid Kit, prescription & non-prescription medications.
- Glasses, dentures, hearing aids.
- Toiletries, hygiene items, moist wipes.
- Flashlights & batteries.
- Battery-operated radio, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration weather radio.
- Cash.
- Extra set of home & car keys.
- Important documents in water proof container - insurance & medical records, bank account numbers, social security information, identification & proof of residency, such as a utility bill,
& documentation of valuables.
- Pet care items, including identification & Immunization records, food & water, carrier or cage, medications, muzzle & leash.
- Tools.
- Toys, books, entertainment items

Necessities for your car:
- Battery operated radio.
- Flashlight & extra batteries.
- Blanket.
- Booster cables, fire extinguisher (5lb, ABC-type), maps, shovels, flares & tire repair kit.
- First aid kit and manual.
- Bottled water & nonperishable food.

 

Prepare for evacuation

- Fuel your vehicle to full.
- Get cash. Following a costal storm, banks & ATM's may be closed.
- Stay alert to storm advisories.
- Board up windows & glass doors. Anchor loose yard objects.
- Map out your route. Use routes specified by authorities.
- Have an emergency plan for your pets.
- Bring your disaster supply kit.
- Secure your home before leaving (lock doors and windows).
- Notify friends and of your plans.

Teach family members how to turn off gas,
electricity and water service to your home or apartment.
